It has been a while since this blog wrote about anything. Caloysport’s will start its new blogging year writing about one of the country’s favorite sport. Boxing has been a source of pride and heartache for Filipino sports fan and this article summarizes the important events relating to boxing in the last couple of weeks.

The Good

1. Nonito Donaire beat Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. to claim the WBO interim superbantamweight crown. He totally dominated the match even sending Vasquez down to the canvass in the 9th round of the 12 round championship bout. He is now setting his sites to fight the exciting Mexican Jorge Arce.

2. The Philippines has new world champion in Johnriel Casimero, who travelled to Argentina to knock out Luis Alberto Lazarte. He will be honored with a victory motorcade in Cebu tomorrow.

The Bad

1. Prospect Karlo Maquinto died after an exciting fight in Caloocan City. The young fighter left lasting impression after surviving 2 knockdowns in the opening round before rallying to salvage a draw and keeping an undefeated record. His efforts went for naught though as he collapsed after the fight and went to a coma. His death has once again exposed the public about the dangers of the sport. Rest in Peace, Karlo Maquinto.

2. No Pacquiao vs. Mayweather for 2012. Well, Mayweather has chosen to give Miguel Cotto a rematch before heading to jail in June. Pacquiao will be facing Timothy Bradley instead. We  are certain that Floyd will not be in the ringside in Pacquiao’s match but he could watch it in television set with some fellow inmates.

The Ugly

1. Ruben Garcia’s scorecard in the Donaire win. Donaire practically dominated the whole bout and he got the surprise of his life when judge Ruben Garcia scored the bout 115-112 in favor of his opponent. The other 2 judges had it 117-110 for Donaire.  Hopefully, Garcia will not be so obvious the next time because poor scoring is ruining the sport.

2. Casimero’s victory in Argentina caused a riot. The party of Johnriel Casimero almost never got back to the Philippines as the rowdy Argentinean boxing fans started to throw things towards them after he knocked out his opponent. Check out this video:
