MOA Arena, Pasay City – The second game of the UAAP Season 75 opening day matches was very different from the first game. While the first game was a big rout, the second game was won by the slimmest of margins. The FEU Tamaraws led by Season 73 MVP RR Garcia and Terene Romeo escaped with a 73-72 win over the UST Growling Tigers.
It was a tough loss for the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers as they had the lead from the opening quarter right until the last few plays of the game. They ended the first 3 quarters with leads of 3,6, and 10. They repeatedly quelled rallies from the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws in the first 30 minutes of play. In the final period, FEU finally figured out how to outplay the Tigers. Former UAAP Rookie of the Year Terence Romeo opened the 4th period with 7 straight points to spark the Tamaraw‘s fourth quarter rally after trailing by double figures by the end of the 3rd canto. Romeo’s outburst brought the Tams to within 3, 57-60. Aljon Mariano and Karim Abdul responded for UST to bring back the lead to 7, 64-57. It was RR Garcia’s turn to shine for the Tams as he scored 6 from long range in an 8-0 run to take the lead at 65-64. Abdul tied the game at 65 after splitting his charities with over 3 minutes left in regulation. The two teams were still knotted at 69 when Jeric Teng made a triple to give the Growling Tigers a 72-69 advantage with a little over a minute left in the game. FEU got closer after Kevin Ferrer was called for goaltending, 71-72. In the next possession, the usually reliable Jeric Fortuna lost the ball and Garcia pounced on the mistake to score the game winner. UST had the last possession but Mariano failed to convert the final field goal attempt of the game.
FEU got MVP numbers from Garcia who had 21 points buoyed by a perfect 4 for 4 shooting in the 3-point region. He also had 5 rebounds and 7 assists. He got good support from Fil-Am Anthony Hargove who had 14 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Spitfire Terence Romeo had 13 points as he combined with Garcia to score 17 of FEU’s 23 points in the crucial 4th quarter. Adbul was dominant for UST as he finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Jeric Teng and Aljon Mariano also scored in double figures for the losing five with 18 and 10 points respectively.
