The Philippine National Football Team scored a dramatic comeback to get a draw against the 3-time Suzuki Cup Champions Singapore in Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium in the opening group B match of the AFF Suzuki Cup. It was a tough draw to swallow for Singapore when they had more clear chances and had the more dominant side most of the game. Singapore score only one goal, when 40-year-old striker Aleksandar Duric made a fine header on the 65th minute. The Filipinos did not give up and continued fighting. When Singapore started to play defensive to protect their 1-0 lead, the Filipinos pressed on to try to secure a draw. And they did. Filipino-British Chris Greatwich exploited a great cross from James Younghusband and scored 3 minutes into injury time to secure a point for the gritty Filipino side.
Other opening day results:
Thailand 2 – 2 Laos
Indonesia 5 – 1 Malaysia
Vietnam 7 – 1 Myanmar
caloycomment: It is a great start for the Philippines. Hopefully this draw will help the national team in its quest for football respectability. Pundits never expected the game to be this close owing to the fact that the Philippines is playing in its first Suzuki Cup since 2007 while Singapore has been champions for 3 times already. It always happen in football when a giant can be held by minnows. The first day of the Suzuki Cup had 2 surprise and 2 blowouts. It will be an interesting tournament for sure. For the Philippines, I just that they keep their gritty and opportunistic style. For Singapore, they should not play ” not to lose” or else they will lose the lead which happened in the 93rd minute. Play offense and go for the rout!!! Go Philippines!!!!
