Mandaue-RDAK/Cebu Landmasters was the top team after the elimination round of the recent SMC Liga Pilipinas Conference 5.  The Super Leg of Conference 5 was held in Cagayan de Oro City, the hometown of Liga team MisOr Meteors. Owing to the superb play of its new players and the home-court advantage, MisOr became the conference 5 champs. Mandaue ended up 4th behind MisOr, Cebu Niños, and Laguna Golden Lions. The owners, management, and players of Mandaue felt that Mandaue should have been the host of the Super Leg.  Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes was said to be mad that he is thinking of not supporting the team in the next conference. Sunstar reported that the league leadership talked to its owners but as of the moment, Mayor Cortes is still leaning towards to skipping the next conference.

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las VegasAmir Khan of Great Britain snatched IBF junior welterweight crown from 33 year old American Zab Judah by knocking out the Ameican in the 5th round of their title bout. Khan raises his record to 26-1 with 18 KOs. He now holds 2 belts. The IBF belt is added to his WBA super lightweight championship belt. The native of Manchester, England lead at all scorecards when the bout was ended.

Khan came into the fight just months after a disappointing win with the rugged Marcos Maidana.  He dominated the first four rounds with his speed while keeping the American on the defensive with his punches. He eventually brought down Judah in the 5th round with a body shot that Judah thought was a low blow. Referee Vic Drakulich ended the lopsided bout at 2:47 in the 5th round.

Reality Check: Azkals blanked by Kuwait 0-3

Australia and Kuwait are still top of the tabl...

Kuwait – The Philippine Men’s National Football Team lost to a higher-ranked Kuwait team 3-0 in the opening leg of their 2nd round pairing of the 2014 World Cup Qualifying tournament.

The Al-Azraq scored in the 16th minute via a Yousef Nasser header. Musaed Neda and Fahed Al-Ibrahim added goals in the 66th and 84th minutes to clinch the victory for the hosts. The first half was close with good scoring chances by Phil Younghusband and Angel Guirado.

In the second half, Kuwait was slow asserting its dominance and helped by the absence of Aly Borromeo and Stephan Shrock, Neil Etheridge was helpless in preventing the host country to score. The game would have been a lopsided rout though if not for goalkeeper Etheridge who made many point blank stops during the course of the game.

The next leg will be played in the  Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on July 28. The Philippines would need to win 4-0 or 5-1 to move on to the next stage.

caloycomment: Well, the game is a learning experience for the Azkals. It is really tough to play against Asia’s best teams in their stadium.  It is time for the Philippines to give them the same treatment when they come here. The popularity of football rests on the shoulders of these brave men. I really hope they will overachieve in their next match. Go Azkals!!!
