Jakarta, Indonesia – As the 21st President’s Cup boxing tournament‘s curtains fall, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) celebrates a very successful campaign. The Filipino pugs finished with 2 golds 2 silvers and 2 bronzes.
The gold medals were from our women’s team. light flyweight Josie Gabuco rallied to beat Gui Jing Shan of China 14-11 in their gold medal match. In the 51 kg division Nesthy Petecio dominated Le Thi Bang of Vietnam 19-12 to win the country’s 2nd gold of the tournament.
Our men finalists were not as lucky. 16 year old boxing standout Ian Clark “Yan Yan” Bautista was overwhelmed by his opponent in the finals 23-10. Although he lost, Yan Yan has caught the eye of the leadership of ABAP. He is deemed to be one of the future stars of the Philippine Amateur Boxing Team. He surpassed expectations by earning a silver medal in a tough international tournament. Team Captain and veteran Charly Suarez lost to China’s Cen Yu in the lightweight finals 17-19.
The bronze medals were from Nathaniel Montealto and Analisa Cruz.
This tournament is part of ABAP’s preparation for the SEA games and the Olympic Qualifiers. The results are promising and with the help of PLDT, the team’s major sponsor the team is expected to improve and start performing in the world’s major boxing tournaments.
