Ateneo De Manila University is now in sole possession of first place in Men’s basketball of the UAAP Season 74 after beating bitter rival De La Salle University Green Archers 81-72. The loss of Season 73 finalist Far Eastern University Tamaraws to the Adamson University Falcons 59-78, propelled the ADMU Blue Eagles to the solo lead.
In their second win, Ateneo was top scored by another marquee UAAP seniors first-timer in Kiefer Ravena. Ravena was so hot that he scored 22 points in the game’s first 20 minutes. It was the highest first half output by a player in two years. Ravena, who was scoreless in his senior’s debut against the Falcons finished the game with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 2 dishes, and 5 steals. He made the best performance of his young college basketball career in front of over 15,000 people in Araneta Coliseum and millions who tuned in Studio 23, and he did it against of all the teams, DLSU Green Archers. I am sure the fans of that proud university in Taft Avenue is salivating and wishing that they lured the son of ex-PBA player Bong Ravena to their side. Ravena was ably supported by Nico Salva (18 points, 7 rebounds), Kirk Long (10 points), and Emman Monfort (10 points, made 6 for 6 of free throws). The Archers were again led by comebacking LA Revilla who scored 22 big points and has been the spark for a La Salle rally all throughout the game.
In the opening game, Alex Nuyles scored 22 points and led 11 other Falcons who scored to breakaway against the favored FEU Tamaraws. Season 73 MVP RR Garcia topscored for the losers with 20 points.
