Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. and the NU Bulldogs got their first win in Season 74 by beating the UP Fighting Maroons 75-66. Parks finally showed what he is capable of by leading the Bulldogs with 30 points along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Nu started strong in the game and even had double digit leads in the first quarter. UP’s second stringers behind Jose Anton Manuel (21 pts 5 rebs 3 asts) and Jelo Montecastro (12 pts 3 asts 3 stls) was able to level game and UP got a 3 point lead at the end of the half via a buzzer-beating trifecta by Mike Silungan. Second half was an all-NU show as Ray Parks displayed superiority and got help from Jeoffrey Javillonar (9 pts 7 rebs). NU outscored UP 35-23 in the closing half. The win is a perfect set-up for the Eric Altamirano-coached school to its match-up with the league-leading Ateneo Blue Eagles. Many will be interested to watch the match-up between Parks and Kiefer Ravena, who both are considered as the future of Philippine basketball.
In the second game, UST starts the year with a 2-0 record after they beat the UE Red Warriors 70-63. The Growling Tigers‘ starters outscored their Red Warriors counterpart 48-2 to retain an immaculate record. The Tigers were led by Kevin Ferrer, Jeric Teng, and Jeric Fortuna who combined for 44 big points. The bench players of UE tried to comback late in the game but they run out of time. The cause was led by Paul Zamar (18 pts 0/7 3 FG shooting) and Shej Sumang (14 pts 7 rebs 4 asts). UE falls to 0-2 and joins DLSU at the bottom of the standings.
