Call it one of the biggest upsets so far this season but these relentless batch of maroons has been showing that they are a different from recent years. Coach Dandan and his staff has somehow instilled a fighting heart of the 2011 UP Fighting Maroons. Four UP ballers led by reserve guard Jose Anton “Jett” Manuel scored in double digits. Manuel scored 20 points shooting 5 out of 8 in the field and hitting 9 of 11 free throws. Mike Silungan had a stat line of 16 points 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Reserve PG Jelo Montecastro had 14 pts 6 rebs and 4 asts while Center Ifeanyi Mbah finished wirth 14 points and 7 rebounds.
RR Garcia, Cris Tolomia, and Aldrech Ramos combined for 42 points in FEU’s losing effort. The FEU Tamaraws only trailed by 3 (25-28) at halftime but they allowed UP to pull away at the end of the 3rd period. Tolomia repeatedly tried to rally the Tamaraws but UP has an answer in Jett Manuel. The 2 players scored double digits in the 4th quarter.
After falling by double digits late in the final quarter, FEU suddenly lost their vaunted poise and committed several errors that killed their own comeback and a costly mistake could have implications in their future game. Anton Bringas was called for his 2nd unsportsmanlike foul and he will miss the big game on Sunday against the Blue Eagles.
The loss brings FEU’s record 4-2 and still good enough for second place but Ateneo gained a game against after they beat UST (2-4) to up their record to 6-0. UP meanwhile has two wins now this season a substantial improvement from last season. They also won against FEU for the first time in 7 years.
