The San Sebastian Stags halted the longest winning streak in the NCAA by the San Beda Red Lions by beating the defending champions, 70-68. The 26-game winning streak by the Lions ended while the Stags starts the 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament with a 9-game winning run.
It was a close game all-through out and Calvin Abueva hit the game-winner with 2:04 left in the game. No team scored afterwards. Abueva (21 points) along with Ronald Pascual (23 points, 7 Rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals & 2 blocks) paced the Topex Robinson-coached Stags. Garvo Lañete led Red Lions with 18 points.
The 2 teams are expected to figure well this season and many experts expect a Stags vs. Lions championship game this season.
