GREEN BAY, Wis.- Months after a season that was threatened by a lockout, the National Football League opened its season with match pitting the last 2 Super Bowl Champs in Green Bay Packers against the New Orleans Saints. The two high scoring offenses led by Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees did not disappoint the fans as they led their teams in the virtual shootout.
Green Bay started the game sizzling hot as Rodgers had 3 TD passes in the first quarter for 21-7 lead. The current Super Bowl MVP issued touchdown passes to Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, and Randall Cobb. Brees three 31 yrs TD pass to Robert Meachem for the Saint’s lone score in the opening period.
In the second quarter the Saints outscored the Packers 10-7 to trim the deficit to 17-28 at half-time. Darren Sproles had a 72 yard punt return for a score. In the 3rd quarter, New Orleans again outscored Green Bay 10-7 via a FG from John Kasay and a Brees’ TD pass to Devery Henderson. Green Bay answered with a TD from an NFL record 108 yeard kickoff return by Cobb. Green Bay held on for the win as they limited the visitors to just 1TD in the final period for a 42-34 opener win.
Brees and Rodgers had an amazing 112.5 and 132.1 QB rating highlighting the fact that the 2 are the probably the best QBs in the NFC. Devery Henderson led all receivers with 6 catches and 100 yards. GB’s James Starks was the games top rusher finishing with 57 yards.
