The Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws erased some of the disappoints early in the Season 74 of the UAAP as they beat Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons 78-74 in their do or die game for UAAP Senior’s Basketball Final’s berth.

The game was close from the get go with FEU only leading by four after the first period after Carl Bryan Cruz made 2 out of 4 free throws from an unsportsmanlike fouls of Eric James Camson and Rodney Brondial. Cruz was also assessed with an unsportsmanlike in a near scuffle after a rebound play. The first quarter ended 18-14 for the third seed Tams.

The Falcons started the 2nd period with 13-2 to blitz capped by a Jerick Cañada drive for a 27-20 lead. FEU answered with an 8-0 run buoyed by trifectas by RR Garcia and Cris Tolomia to take back the lead 28-27. Adamson outscored FEU ,8-5, the rest of the quarter to hold a slim 2 point lead at the halftime break. The score at the half was 35-33.

FEU started with a 9-3 run in the third to take back the lead at 42-38 and force Coach Leo Austria to call a ceasefire. Adamson cannot seem to penetrate the 4 point barrier that FEU has built as the lead stayed at 4, 50-46, as the game was halted for a timeout. Tolomia continues his stellar play as he lead the Tams to a 7-4 wind up for a 57-50 at the end of the third period. Tolomia had 15 points by the end of the 3rd period.

Tolomia continued to wax hot in the 4th quarter as he conspired with Terence Romeo to give FEU a twin digit lead at 62-52. Alex Nuyles answered with a 3 point play to cut the lead to 7. Carl Bryan Cruz hits 2 free throws off a  Lionel Manyara foul for a 64-55 lead for the Tams. A timeout was called with 6:26 left in the game. After the timeout, the teams were even in scoring but RR Garcia got creative and scored to give FEU another double digit lead at 70-59.

With their backs on the wall, Adamson turned to senior guard Jerick Cañada to lead them to a clutch 12-4 run. Cañada scored 10 points from 2 drives and 2 three-pointers in that searing run. FEU calls a timeout with their lead down to 74-71 with less than 2 minutes left in the game.

Ramos scored after the time out to extend the Tam’s lead to 5. The Falcons responded with 3 free throws from Camson and Nuyles to cut the lead to 76-74. FEU coach Bert Flores calls his last time out to draw up their final play. FEU cannot buy a basket but keeps on getting the offensive rebound and it forced the Falcons to foul Romeo with 4 seconds left in the game. Season 73 Rookie of the Year Terence Romeo calmly sinks the 2 freebies to ice the game, 78-74. Adamson missed their final attempt at the basket to hand the final slot to the FEU Tamaraws.

The first match of UAAP Season 74 Finals will be on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Araneta Coliseum at 3 pm and it will aired live at ABS-CBN Channel 2.
