It’s September 24, 2011 and two important games with big importance in Philippine basketball were played today. The 2 games were the Game 1 of UAAP Season 74 Finals between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the FEU Tamaraws, and the FIBA Asia semifinal game between Jordan and our very own Pilipinas Smart Gilas.
Both games were close but in the second half the stronger team emerged to win the important ball game. Smart-Gilas lost to Jordan 75-61 in the semifinal encounter. The Philippines actually led at the end of the first half 29-28, only to falter and allow Jordan to dominate and win. The loss sends the team to the bronze medal game with the winner getting a slot at the final Olympic qualifier.
In the UAAP, the FEU Tamaraws were actually leading after the first 10 minutes of the game, 19-14. They even had a ten point lead at 26-16. Ateneo rallied behind the combined effort of its starters to level the game at the half, 33-all. The game was still tied at 45 when Ateneo made a 15-4 run behind Nico Salva and JP Erram to take the lead for good at 60-49.
There was no let up for Ateneo in the 4th period as they got hot from the outside and pulled away from the Tams. The final quarter was an Ateneo exhibition as the Ateneo faithful were treated with 3-pointers and dunks. The game ended 82-64. Ateneo is one game away from a four-peat.
In other games at the UAAP, the FEU Baby Tams beats the NU Bullpups 71-67 in overtime. Cebuano Jerie Pingoy finished with 22 points 8 caroms 4 assists and 5 thefts.
