2009 World Championships Featherweight gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko beat 2009 World Championships Lightweight champion Domenico Valentino of Italy. The top seeded Italian got the short end of an 11-17 score. Lomachenko will try to win a gold medal in a different division.
Yasnier TOLEDO (3) 21 – 9 Gani ZHAILAUOV
3rd seeded Yasnier Toledo of Cuba upended Kazakhstan’s Gani Zhailaouv, 21-9. Toledo is starting to show that he will be one of Cuba’s gold medal hopefuls in 2012. He is one of the 7 Cubans who got a spot in the 2012 games.

Cuban Julio de la Cruz Peraza’s magnificent tournament as he beat Egor MEKHONTSEV of Russia, the tournament’s top seed and defending gold medalist. La Cruz was never even seeded in the tournament yet he advanced further than his more fancied teammates.

Elshod Rasulov fell to Adilbek NIYAZYMBETOV, 9-11. NIYAZYMBETOV is also of the surprising finalists in Baku 2011.

Anthony Josua of England won the battle of unexpected semifinalists with German Erik Pfeifer in an abbreviated fashion. Joshua’s win gave Italian World and Olympic champion Robert Cammarelle a free ticket to the 2012 London Olympics.

Surprising second seed Magomedrasul MEDZHIDOV of Azerbaijan continue to justify his seeding from critics as he advance to the finals by beating Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko.
