The 2nd FIBA Asia U16 Championship finals will be between two teams that are very familiar with each other. China will face East Asian rival Korea in a rematch of the finals in 2009 where China beat Korea. China also bet the Koreans in Group F in the second round of competitions in Nha Trang City, Vietnam. Here is how they hurdled their respective semifinal foes:
JAPAN 43 – 82 CHINA
It took China just 5 minutes to adjust their game and rout the Japan U16 team. After just leading by 10-8 in the middle of the first quarter, China turned on its booster and blitzed to a 30-14 lead when the first quarter buzzer sounded. They continued the onslaught the rest of the way to win easily, 82-43. Zhao Jiwei and Yan Haoxin scored 18 points each to pace the defending champions. Young big man Zhou Qi got a good workout to finish with 15 points. Yusei Sugiura was the lone bright spot for Japan as finished with 19 points even outscoring Zhou in the match. China made 12 connections from 3-point distance while the Japanese were o of 8. The victory earns China a spot in next year’s FIBA U17 Championships.
KOREA 67 – 58 PHILIPPINES
The second semifinal pairing pitted Philippines and its long-time nemesis Korea. Korea has broken the hearts Philippine basketball fans several times in recent history. Korea beat the Philippines recently in FIBA Asia Championshipsbronze medal game. The outcome was still the same, as Korea once again defeated a gritty Philippine squad that is abundant in talent but lacked the height. The game was practically even in all quarters save for the 2nd period when Korea’s tallest player 6-8 Park Intae entered the game and eliminated the Philippine’s inside incursions. Korea outscored the Philippines in the second quarter 18-8. The Koreans just matched the Philippines point for point the rest of the way secure the win. The Philippines were actually able to trim the lead to 2 at 58-60 but they failed to score the rest of the way as Korea clinches a spot in the 2012 FIBA U17 Championships with the victory. Heo Hoon, the son of Hur Jae, finished with 22 points to lead Korea. Kim Nakhyeon and Kim Gookhan both scored 16 to support Heo. Eight players scored for the Philippines led by the 12 points of Rodolfo Alejandro III and Renzar Henry Asilum. The Philippines will try to capture a bronze medal against Japan while Korea faces China in the finals.
