The medal race is really heating up as Cuba overtook Brazil in the latest medal tally. Here is how each country stacks up against each other:

Football Men’s Tournament

Uruguay beat Costa Rica in the bronze medal match 2-1 while Mexico took the football gold via a 1-0 win over Argentina. Jeronimo Amione scored in the 75th minute for the gold medal winners.

Water Polo Women’s Tournament

The USA Women’s water polo team is going to London 2012 after beating Canada 19-18 in a very long shootout. Regulation ended with an 8-8 score and the overtime periods were scoreless. Stanford’s Maggie Steffens made the game winning shot. USA rallied via a Kami Craig power play goal with only 31 seconds left in the game to force overtime.

Field Hockey Women’s Tournament

The USA Women’s Hockey team is also going to the London Olympics as they upset defending World Champion Argentina 4-2. The Las Leonas lost for the first time in Pan American games history. Paige Selenski, Shannon Taylor, Katie O’Donnell, and Michelle Vittese scored for the world no. 13 USA. The USA finished 8th in the 2008 Olympics.

USA continued its dominance in fencing with wins in Men’s Team foil and Women’s team sabre.

The host country Mexico cashed in on the diving events to pull away from Canada for the battle for 4th in the medal standings. Mexico is not closer to Brazil (3rd) than Canada (5th).

Lucelia Ribeiro won a gold for Brazil to keep the battle for 2nd close. Cuba only got a bronze in the event.

Canada’s Mary Elizabeth Spencer won the Women’s Boxing Light-Heavyweight division gold medal for the 26th gold of Canada in the games.

Lenier Pero won another boxing gold for Cuba beating Julio Castillo 16-10 in the finals. In his way to the gold medal, Pero beat Canada’s Steven Couture and Argentina’s Yamil Peralta. Cuba has won 4 golds and 1 silver so far in boxing. Yosbany Veitia is the only Cuban boxer who lost his finals match as he was beaten by Mexico’s Joselito Velasquez in the lightweight finals 12-20.

Boxing has always been the gold mine for Cuba in any major competition. The 2011 Pan Americans were no different as Lazaro Jorge Alvarez, Roniel Iglesias, Emilio Correa and Lenier Eunice Pero topped their respective weight class. Cuba also got a silver from Yosbany Veitia.

The race is going to be tighter in the coming days and there will be more exciting events at the 2011 PAn American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico.
