The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and the Meralco Bolts are slowing showing the league that they are indeed two of the best teams in the current Philippine Cup. The Elasto Painters routed the winless Shopinas.com Clickers despite playing without head coach Yeng Guiao majority of the game due to some technical fouls. Meralco, meanwhile, defeated crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra Kings in the main game in last night’s doubleheader.
Rain or Shine 96 – 75 Shopinas.com
For the 3rd game in a row, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters soundly defeated their PBA opponents. After embarrassing Alaska and Meralco, the Elasto Painters routed the hapless Shopinas.com Clickers. The game was very close in the first half before Rain or Shine outscored the Shopinas 27-10 in the third period to pull away and raise their win-loss record to 6-1. The Clickers only made 5 baskets in 18 attempts in the fateful third period. Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao was ejected in the first half after incurring 2 technical fouls. He was meted a 2nd “T” after shoving Shopinas’ Ogie Menor who was taunting the RoS bench after scoring. Losing their coach inspired the Painters to pour it on and show why they are the league leaders right now. Jeff Chan is really having his best season as he broke his career high with 28 points. He made 4 triples in 9 attempts. Jervy Cruz had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Buenafe and JR Quinahan added 12 and 9 markers respectively. Rookie James Sena top scored for the Clickers with 15 followed by Menor’s 14.
Meralco 93 – 87 Ginebra
Fresh from a 44-point drubbing in the hands of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, the Meralco Bolts is back in the winning track after beating the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 93-87. The ballgame was even for 3 quarters as it was tied at 66-all going into the final 12 minutes. Meralco’s Mark Macapagal hit a booing three-pointer with 1:53 left to give the Bolts an 88-82 lead. Jayjay Helterbrand and Nino Canaleta scored for Ginebra to cut the lead to 1 with less than a minute to play, 87-88. Ginebra failed to score again and Meralco was steady on the line to hang for the win. Come backing Mark Cardona sparked 4 other Bolts players to score in twin digits with 25 points 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Sol Mercado, Mark Isip, Gabby Espinas, and veteran Asia Taulava combined for 49 points and 29 rebounds to support “Captain Hook”. Cardona scored over 20 games in 2 games since he got reactivated after an injury. Canaleta led the Kings with 16. Helterbrand and Enrico Villanueva scored 14 points each. Meralco improved their record to 5-3 while Ginebra dropped to 3-3.
