The Virginia Commonwealth University Rams is the first team to upset a higher seeded team in this years US NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Rams (29-6) beat the Missouri Valley Conference‘s Wichita State Shockers (26-6, AP No.18), 62-59.
The Rams started hot taking a 21-13 lead with 8:33 left in the first half. The Shockers responded with an 11-0 blast to grab the lead at 24-21. Senior guard Bradford Burgess conspired with Treveon Graham for a 13-1 reply by Rams to end the half with 34-25 lead. VCU controlled the first 6 and a half minutes of the 2nd half by outscoring Wichita State 12-8 and taking their biggest lead of the game at 46-33. The Shockers rallied and eventually cut down the lead to 1, 54-53, after a Gary Stutz lay up. VCU’s Troy Daniels answered with 3 point shot to give the Rams a 57-53 cushion with 2:54 left to play. Joe Ragland and Toure Murry hit back to back trifectas for the Shockers to give the AP No.18 team a 59-57 lead with 2:05 to play. Those were however the last points scored by Wichita State this season as Burgess hit a clutch 3 with 1:33 left and Darius Theus scored the final points of the give and give VCU a 62-59 upset victory.
The win was the seventh for VCU as an 11th seed or worse since the NCAA expanded the tournament to 64 teams in 1985. No other team has more wins as a low seed than the Rams. The Rams earned their second straight tournament appearance after winning the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament with 59-56 win over Drexel in the finals. The Shockers were the regular season champs of their conference but fell to Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals.
