Draymond Green (24 pts 12 rebs 10 asts) had a triple double in leading top seed Michigan State (28-7) over LIU (25-9). The Brooklyn Blackbird were hanging around in the first half as they were only down by 5, 37-42 at the intermission. Michigan State stepped on the gas in the middle of the final half to pull away. The number 1 seeds are now 112-0 over 16th seeds in NCAA tournament history.
Filipino-American Jason Brickman started at guard for LIU and played 39 minutes. He finished with 5 points 7 assists 2 steals and 5 turnovers. His final stats for his sophomore year are 9.7 ppg 7.3 apg 0.9 spg 40.5% 3 FG clip . He is No.5 in the NCAA Division I in assists.
#14 St. Bonaventure Bonnies 63 – 66 #3 Florida State Seminoles
The Seminoles (25-9) came to the 2012 tournament with great confidence as they are the only team to beat North Carolina and Duke twice this season. They were however tested by the Bonnies (20-12) led by NBA prospect Andrew Nicholson. The 6-9 senior from Canada scored 2o points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the Bonnies who were gunning for their first win at the Big Dance since 1970. His efforts were not enough though as Bernard James scored 19 points and lead the Seminoles for the win. The Bonnies were keeping it close all throughout and the game was even tied at 52 with 6:57 left. Florida State was just deeper and steadier at crunchtime.
Fil-Canadian Matthew Wright of St. Bonaventure was held scoreless but had 3 assists in 13 minutes of action. He finished his sophomore season with averages of 7.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg. 2.8 rpg. Wright reinforced the Philippine U-18 team along with DLSU’s Norberto Torres a few years back.
#10 Purdue Boilermakers 72-69 #7 Saint Mary’s Gaels
Purdue (22-12) controlled the whole game only to relinquish its lead to St. Mary’s (27-6) with 45 seconds left at 68-69. The lower seeded Boilmakers were able to recover though and advance to the next round. Terone Johnson has 21 points and 5 assists to lead the winners. The Gael’s were led by Rob Jones who top scored with 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
6-4 Fil-American Guard Stephen Holt played 27 minutes off the bench. He finished with 2 points and 5 rebounds. His sophomore season stats are: 10.4 ppg 4.7 rpg 3.3 apg 1.8 spg.
