Slovakia ended a string of seven straight defeats against Canada by eliminating the later in their quarterfinal pairing with a magical 4-3 victory.  The last time Slovakia won was in the 2002 finals. The defeat sent Canada bowing out in the quarterfinals for the 3rd straight year. The Slovaks struck early as they gained a 2 goal advantage in the first period via goals from Branko Radivojevic  and Miroslav Satan. Canada’s lackadaisical first period was redeemed by a goal by Evander Kane that was setup by Ryan Getzlaf .  The second period was all Canada as they outshot their opponents 17-7 which resulted to 2 goals from Jeff Skinner and Alexandre Burrows.  Trailing 3-2, Slovakia responded by tying the game with a Milan Bartovic‘s goal with 6:30 left in the game. The game winner came on a power play goal by Michal Handzus with 2:28 left.

Top-seeded Russia took care of business by beating Norway, 5-2. It was not an easy win as the score line suggest as the game was tied at 2-2 going into the final period. The win brought Russia to the semifinals for the 6th straight year. Norway has never defeated Russia in the 9 times they met in the World Championships. Alexei Yemelin, Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Popov, Nikolai Zherdev, and Ilya Nikulin scored for Russia who needed a 3 goal outburst in the 3rd period to put the game away. Patrick Thoresen and and Per-Åge Skrøder  were the scorers for the fast rising Norwegian team.

Sweden  3 –  Czech Republic

(1-2, 1-1, 1-1)

May 17th 2012, h. 20:15

In a “Big Six” match-up, the Czech Republic eliminated 2012 co-hosts Sweden from the competition with a dramatic 4-3 victory.  The 2 countries met in an do or die match for the fifth straight year. Sweden eliminated the Czech Republic in 2008, 2009, and last year while the Czechs booted out the Swedes in 2010 en route to their world championship trophy that year.  Loui Eriksson found the net early for the hosts for a 1-0 lead.  Czech Republic tied it with a goal by Petr Nedved.  Jiri Novotny’s goal gave the Czechs a 2-1 lead after the first period of play. Martin Erat’s power play goal doubled the lead.  Detroit Red Wing’s Henrik Zetterberg and Jonathan Ericsson rallied the home team with goals to tie the game to 3-all.  The heartbreaking game winner though came with 29 seconds left when Milan Michalek stole the puck from Niklas Kronwall and beat goalkeeper Viktor Fasth.  The Czechs will face the Slovaks in a tough battle for a final slot.

United States  2 –  Finland

(0-0, 1-1, 1-2)

May 17th 2012, h. 18:30

Co-hosts Finland remained in the competition after showing the U.S.A. the exits with 3-2 win. Jesse Joensuu scored 2 goals for the defending champions. He scored the game’s first goal while his second was the game winning goal that was made with only 8.8 seconds left in the game clock. Kyle Palmieri and Bobby Ryan scored goals for USA for a 2-1 lead early in the third period.  The game was tied with 6:58 left when Valtteri Filppula’s shot was deflected by Mikko Koivu’s skate for a goal.  The tied game was an excellent set-up for the game winner by Joensuu.  The Finns will be battling the Russians for place in the finals.
