In a “Big Six” match-up, the Czech Republic eliminated 2012 co-hosts Sweden from the competition with a dramatic 4-3 victory. The 2 countries met in an do or die match for the fifth straight year. Loui Eriksson found the net early for the hosts for a 1-0 lead. Czech Republic tied it with a goal by Petr Nedved. Jiri Novotny’s goal gave the Czechs a 2-1 lead after the first period of play. Martin Erat’s power play goal doubled the lead. Detroit Red Wing’s Henrik Zetterberg and Jonathan Ericsson rallied the home team with goals to tie the game to 3-all. The heartbreaking game winner though came with 29 seconds left when Milan Michalek stole the puck from Niklas Kronwall and beat goalkeeper Viktor Fasth.
