2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Day 1 Partial Results; 7 PHL bets win first match

All eyes in Doha for 2012 World 9 Ball Championship.

Doha, Qatar- The 2012 World 9-Ball Championship is underway.  This year’s tournament has a total pot of $300,000 with $40,000 going to the winner and $20,000 to the runner-up. In the first round, 128 of the best cue masters will try to secure one of the 64 slots in the knockout stages.  The first round is double elimination which means that if a player losses twice, he is eliminated from the competition.

So far in the first day, the Philippine contingent went 7-2. Legendary Efren “Bata” Reyes led the onslaught with a 9-3 thrashing of Croatian Philipp Stojanovich. In the same group, Loyme Vicente won his first match against Mohammad Berjawi of Lebanon, 9-4. Ramil Gallego won over India’s Sundeep Gulati. Jundel Mazon outlasted Briton Chris Melling, 9-7. Carlo Biado routed Rajandran Nair of Saudi Arabia, 9-1. 2010 champion Francisco “Django” Bustamante got a 9-6 win over Taipei’s Lo Li Wen.  Roberto Gomez dispatched Takhti Zarekani of Iran via a 9-6 score. Oliver Medenilla and Elvis Calasang were not as lucky as they got beaten by Abdullah Al Yousef(KUW) and Han Hao Hang(CHN) respectively.

Other notable winners were defending Yukio Akagariyama, Malta’s Tony Drago, Fu Chei Wei(TPE), Britains’ Darren Appleton, Fu Jianbo of China and Ko Pin Yi of Taipei.  Here are the complete results of the first matches:
