Ynares Center, Antipolo City – Sister teams Barangay Ginebra Kings and Petron Blaze Boosters started off their respective semifinal campaigns with wins over the Meralco Bolts and the league-leading Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Both teams raised their records to 6-4 with the wins.
The great night for the San Miguel Corporation-owned teams was started by Ginebra’s win in the opening game. The Gin Kings took advantage of the Meralco 5 that has to play its second game in 3 nights. They blitzed the Bolts 25-10 after the opening quarter and cruised to an 89-76 victory. Kerby Raymundo played one of his best games in Ginebra uniform by scoring 16 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists along with making 1 steal and a block. Ginebra import Cedric Bozeman had a double-double as well with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Twelve Ginebra players scored in the win. The losing team were led by import Mario West and Asi Taulava who combined for 39 points and 20 rebounds. The win was Barangay Ginebra King’s second consecutive going back to the elimination round.
In the nightcap, sister team Petron Blaze Boostes completed the San Miguel sweep by edging out the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Petron stepped on the gas early and took a 56-39 lead at the end of the first half. Petron was so hot in the first half that they even took a 23 point lead at one point. In the second half, it was different story as Rain or Shine woke up from its slumber and started chipping away from Petron’s lead. They, however, ran out of time and conceded an 88-90 game to Petron. Rain or Shine just lost for the second time in this year’s Governor’s Cup. New import Marcus Faison paced Petron by scoring 20 points. He got great support from the locals with Joseph Yeo (14), Arwind Santos (12), and Jay Washington (11) all finishing in double figures. Jamelle Cornley lead the Painters with 36 points along with 10 caroms and 4 dishes.
In today’s games, the PBA will have its first game ever in the MOA Arena with a match-up pitting last Commissioner’s Cup finalists B-Meg Llamados (6-3) and Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters (5-4).
