2012 PBA Governor’s Cup Finals: RoS takes 2-1 lead sans Paul Lee

28 07 2012

Smart Araneta Coliseum – With their top scorer watching in the sidelines wearing a sling, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters gave their top rookie Paul Lee a reason to enjoy the ringside seats as they delivered a stunning performance and won 93-84 over the B-Meg Llamados.

Coach Yeng Guiao backed his guarantee that the Painters can win without Lee. Lee injured his shoulder while attempting to slap the ball away from Peter June Simon‘s hand in the 4th quarter of Game 2. In Game 3, the Painters actually started tentatively as they allowed the Llamados to open the game with 7-0 blast. They managed to bring down the lead to four at 19-23 at the end of the first quarter.

The Elasto Painters controlled the second quarter to emerge with a 2-point lead going to the halftime break. The floodgates opened for Rain or Shine in the 3rd canto as they poured it on and outscored B-Meg 30-20 to extend their lead to 12. The Elasto Painters hit 5 three point shots in the crucial quarter.  They manage to increase the lead to 21 early in the final period before the shock troopers of the Llamados brought the lead back to 7 with under a minute left.  Jeff Chan was steady on the line to ice the game for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Cornley outplays Blakely in Game 3

Jamelle Cornley had a monster game with 26 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists.  He outscored the combined 24-point output of B-Meg counterpart Marcus Blakely, James Yap, and Simon. Jeff Chan contributed 18 big points all scored in the second half. Jireh Ibanes was hot in the first period and ended up with 12.  B-Meg was top scored by Jonas Villanueva‘s 18 markers.

In the post-game interview, Cornley reiterated that he came to the Philippines not to become the best import but to win the championship.  He even quipped that he vote for Blakely as best import and he can keep the trophy if he wants to. Cornley is showing the PBA and RoS fans that he is committed to a championship with or without star rookie Paul Lee.
