From 5 cue artists left after the Round of 64, the Philippine contingent won 3 of 5 matches in the round of 32.  With 3 pool masters left, the Philippines is the most represented country in the Round of 16. The round of 32 for the Philippines was marked with 2 wins against players from Chinese-Taipei. Here are the results of the matches involving Filipino participants of the Round of 32 in the 2012 World 9-Ball Championship:

WORLD 9 BALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 Day 5 Recap: Competition down to last 32; Only 5 Filipinos left

Doha, Qatar – The Philippine campaign in the 2012 World 9 Ball Championship almost got wiped out at the start of the knockout stages. From 13 participants, the Filipino contingent is down to 5.  Gone are the likes of 2010 champion Django Bustamante, 2006 champ Ronnie Alcano, 2007 runner-up Roberto Gomez, and Carlo Biado. The hopes for a Filipino champion now lies in cue sticks of legendary Bata Reyes, Dennis Orcullo, Lee Van Corteza, Antonio Gabica, and Jundel Mazon.

Unlike the Philippine campaign, the Taipei contingent made a killing in Round 64.  They won 6 of 7 matches including 2 against Filipinos. Two other Filipinos were eliminated by a Chinese player. Other notable losers in the round of 64 were Malta’s Tony Drago, Germany’s Thomas Engert, Britain’s Daryl Peach, and Taipei’s  Chang Yu Lung.  The loser go home with $2,000 each. Top prize of this competition is $40,000.

World 9-Ball Championship 2012 Day 5 First Half Update: 3 up 3 down for the PHL cue artists in the Round of 64

After 16 matches in the Round of 64 in the World 9-Ball Championship, 3 Philippine bets have entered the Round of 32 while 3 Filipino pool players are eliminated from the competition. There are 7 Filipino cue masters who will play for a spot in the Round of 32 later tonight.  The early winners are led by veteran Dennis Orcollo who avenged his Day 3 defeat to Andrew Kong of Hong Kong.  He will be joined by Lee Van Corteza and Antonio Gabica. Corteza beat Belgium’s Serge Das while Gabica eliminated Mario He of Austria.

The 3 PHL bets that were eliminated are Israel Rota, Marlon Caneda, and Elvis Calasang.  Rota was beaten by Hao Xiang Han of China. Caneda was eliminated by Nick Van Der Berg and Calasang was sent packing by John Morra of Canada.

World 9-Ball Championship 2012 Day 3: 32 Advance including 7 PHL players

Al Sadd Sports ClubDoha, Qatar– Day 3 marked the entry of 32 players to the knockout stage of the competitions. The 32 were the winners of the winner’s bracket matches held yesterday. Among the 32 were 7 Filipinos led by former winners Efren “Bata” Reyes, Francisco “Django” Bustamante, and Ronnie “Volcano” Alcano.  Also qualifying were Carlo Biado, Lee Van Corteza, Antonio Gabica, and Roberto Gomez. Other notable winners were Malta’s Tony Drago, Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann, Taipei’s Ko Pin Yi, Britain’s Darren Appleton, and German Ralph Souquet.  The losers of the matches will need to win their do or die matches to be held tomorrow. Only 64 players out of the 128 participants will be playing in the money round.  Nine other Filipinos still have  chance to be in the next phase of the tournament that offers a top prize of $40,000. After 3 days, PHL cue masters have a combined record of 23 wins and 11 losses.
