World 9-Ball Championship 2012 Day 4: Round of 64 cast complete; 13 PHL cue masters qualify

Al Sadd Sports ClubDoha, Qatar – Day 4 was all about win or go home. Thirty-two players were sent packing home yesterday as players completed the final elimination matches to determine this year’s Top 64. Among those who are out of competition are veterans Ramil Gallego of the Philippines, Chris Melling of Great Britain, American Shane Van Boening, Chinese Fu Jianbo, Dutch Niels Feijen, Germany‘s Oliver Ortmann, and European number one Dimitri Jungo of Switzerland.

There is no American who qualified to the knockout stages. The Top 64 will feature 13 Filipinos, 7 Taiwanese, 6 Japanese, and surprisingly 4 Kuwaitis.  The 4 nationalities almost comprised half the remaining field. The 13 Filipinos are led by 3 ex-World 9 champs; Bata Reyes (1999), Django Bustamante (2010), and Ronnie Alcano (2006). Here is a recap of yesterday’s matches:

World 9-Ball Championships Day 4: The Pinoy onslaught

Doha, Qatar – Day 4 of the 2011 World 9 Ball Championships was a fruitful one for the Filipino contingent.  Lee Van Corteza beat Marcus Chamat 9-6 to join 16 other Filipino billiard players in knockout stages of this prestigious tournament.  17 Pinoys mean that more 1/4 of the players left are from the Philippines.
