Jones Cup: Gilas beats Japan, enters semis

13 08 2011

Japan sent its Team B in this year’s competition but their has been been able to keep up with most of Asia’s best. They even led by 3 after 3 quarters against the vaunted Pilipinas Smart-Gilas.  PBA veteran Dondon Hontiveros led a 16-2 run to help the Philippines take the lead for good and drained the fighting spirit of the pesky Japanese team.

Marcus Douhit dominated the inside to finish with 32 points and 18 rebounds. He was backed up by Hontiveros, Chris Tiu, and Marico Lassiter who all finished in double figures. Keijuro Matsui was stellar in leading Japan with 27 points from a perfect 8 out of 8 in the 3-point area.

The Philippines will battle Iran in the semifinals of the 33rd William Jones Cup without star shooter JV Casio. The other semifinal pairing will be between Korea and the hosts, Taiwan.

Scores:

Smart-Gilas Pilipinas 94 — Douthit 32, Hontiveros 14, Tiu 11, Lassiter 11, Lutz 9, Barroca 8, Aguilar 7, Taulava 2, Casio 0, Baracael 0, Ballesteros 0, Ababou 0.

Japan 78 — Matsui 27, Nishimura 11, Okada 9, Hinkley 8, Ota 7, Shonaka 5, Togashi 5, Ito 4, Arao 2, Kamata 0, Noguchi 0, Sakai 0.

Quarter scores: 24-20; 49-44; 65-68; 94-78.

PBA Cold Player of the Week: Dondon Hontiveros

9 07 2011

Cold Hontiveros (pba-online.net)

After starting the new conference on a mean shooting streak, Air21 Express Hotshot Dondon Hontiveros is on a slump. In his last 3 games, he just scored 7 points all in all. He even got a big fat 0 in his game last night against the import-less Barangay Ginebra Kings. Although his rebounding and passing is within his averages, the Cebuano ace is just making 10% of his shots (2/20) and has a horrid 0 out of 11 shooting from the 3 point range.

Dondon needs to find his rhythm again.  Air21 needs his scoring touch in order to have respectable finish in the season ending tournament. The team is also struggling with the absence of Dorian Pena and Danny Seigle plus the struggles of import Alpha Bangura. Air 21 is on a 9 game losing slide dating back to being swept by Talk N’ Text in last conference’s semifinals.

The big trade by San Miguel and Air21 is starting to favor the Sam Miguel Beer (Petron Blaze) francise.  Hopefully, Hontiveros will start to regain his early conference form to at least make the trade balanced.

Caloy Stats of the Day (June 23, 2011)

23 06 2011

0 = the number of goals scored by the Philippine National Football Team otherwise known as the Azkals in their match Bundesliga Division II side FC Ingolstadt.  Yes it was a tune up game but after 2 straight 4-1 victories over lesser sides, I wanted a win against a Div. II side to show our capabilities.  There is a saying though about learning more in defeats than in victories.  Hopefully, the lessons the Azkals learned today will lead to a victory against Sri Lanka.

1 and 4 = the lottery picks of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft tomorrow. Lebron left, Lebron was defeated, it’s time for the Cavs to start rebuilding.  This draft will be the first major step towards respectability.  Still, there are no shoe-ins with those picks unlike in the past years. Who would they get? Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams? Both?? Could Cleveland pick Enes Kanter? It is going to be an interesting and well-covered draft.

3 = the number of consecutive losses by the Air 21 Express to open the 2011 Governor’s Cup.  Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros have so far shown the pinoy basketball fans that they can put up numbers that made them legendary names in their SMB days but the team is losing. Maybe the trades have affected their rotation and import.  It is still early in the conference but a 0-3 start makes the next games must-wins for them.

4 = the number of goals conceded by the Azkals against Ingolstadt 04.  The club name reflects the score of the match 0-4 in favor of the German side. I hope they lose 0-4 in exhibition matches. I do not miss the days they we lost to our neighbors by more than 5 goals.

24 = is the combined points scored by Powerade Tiger rookies Sean Anthony and Jai Reyes to clinch the Tiger’s first victory in the 2011 PBA Governor’s Cup. The whole Air 21 Express Team only scored 23 points in the final period.  That says a lot about how “HOT” this two were last night.
