Baku, AzerbaijanPhilippine Bantamweight bet Joan Tipon‘s quest for an olympic spot ended in an 8-17 loss to 2010 Asian Games bantamweight silver medalist Zhang Jiawei of China. He is the 4th PHL to fall out of the competition. The combined record for team Philippines so far is 5-4. The hopes to for olympic berths and world amateur championships medal fall to the shoulders of Rey Saludar and Mark Anthony Barriga.

AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011: Charly Suarez loses; Only 3 PHL Boxers left

Baku, Azerbaijan– The Olympic hopes of Filipino pug Charly Suarez ended in the first round of 2011 World  Amateur Boxing Championships as fell to Ecuadorian Luiz Enrique Porozo Mina, 13-11. Suarez failed to join Mark Anthony Barriga, Rey Saludar, and Joan Tipon in the second round of the competitions. Only half of the 6 Filipino boxers sent by ABAP to Baku survived their first round fights.

AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011: Day 3, Tipon squeaks past Argentinian

Joan Tipon followed Mark Anthony Barriga and Rey Saludar to the second round of the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championship held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Tipon beat Argentinian Bantamweight Alberto Melian, 13-12. Joan Tipon is the 2006 Asian Games Bantamwweight Gold medallist. He will challenge 2010 Asian Games bantamweight silver medalist Zhang Jiawei of China in the second round.
