2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters: Orcollo in the final 4

Quezon City – There were 4 Filipinos who were competing in the  2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters. Defending Champion Dennis Orcollo, Pool legends Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante, and Lee Van Corteza. Among the 4, only 2 Pinoy cue masters are left in this single elimination tournament.

Django Bustamante bowed to Canadian Jason Klatt , 8-3 yesterday. Bata Reyes was defeated by England’s Darren Appleton, 5-8. The hopes of the Filipino billiard fans now fall on Orcollo and Corteza.

Lee Van Corteza squeaked past reigning World Ten Ball champion Huidji See of the Netherland, 8-7 in his Round of 16 match. World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World No.1 Dennis Orcollo meanwhile, barged into the Final 4 after beating Chinese Chang Jung-lin, 8-1. It is a great follow-up of his 8-2 rout of Tony Drago yesterday.

It will be exciting to see if a Filipino will be able to defend its home turf in this tournament that will give the winner $20,000.





Corteza rules Malaysian 9-Ball Tourney

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Filipino pool player Lee Van Corteza won $7,000 after defeating Chinese-Taipei’s Ko Pin-chung, 13-8, in the final match of the Malaysian Golden Break 9-Ball Asian Invitational tournament held at the Golden Break Snooker and Pool Club.

He earlier beat Indonesian bet Riyan Setiawan 11-1, to set up a match against Taiwenese cue artist who beat his elder brother Ko Pin-yi, 11-7. Ko Pin-chung was given $3,500 for his second place finish.

Three other Filipinos, Rodolfo Luat, Antonio Lining and Allan Cuartero who represented Kuwait joined the tournament but lost in the earlier rounds.

SM City North EDSA Mall in Quezon City will host the 2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters. The prestigious pool tournament will be on Sept. 3-5, 2011.  This invitational event will feature 16 of the best billiards players in the world.

There are 4 Filipinos entered in the event where the winner will get $20,000. The defending champion is none other than Dennis Orcullo.

The winners of the round of 16 matches will play again on Sunday afternoon and evening. The semi-finals and finals will be held on the next day. The matches will be Race to 8, winner breaks.

Doha, Qatar – Day 4 of the 2011 World 9 Ball Championships was a fruitful one for the Filipino contingent.  Lee Van Corteza beat Marcus Chamat 9-6 to join 16 other Filipino billiard players in knockout stages of this prestigious tournament.  17 Pinoys mean that more 1/4 of the players left are from the Philippines.

US Open 9 Ball: Mixed Results for Filipino in their Day 4 Matches

Yesterday, Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francsico “Django” Bustamante marched on the winner’s bracket by winning their third respective matches of the 2010 US Open 9 Ball Tournament. Django Bustamante came back from a 1-4 deficit to beat Mexico’s Oscar Dominguez 11-6. Reyes on the other hand overwhelmed Japense Tomoroo Takano 11-2.  They are just two of the 32 unbeaten players left in the tournament.

The other Filipinos lost in their Day 4 match-ups. Amang Parica, Lee Van Corteza, Ramil Gallego, and Ronnie Alcano all bowed to their respective opponents.  They will now have to survive to loser’s bracket in order to win this very prestigious tournament.
