Manny V. Pangilinan has another collegiate double as San Beda won the NCAA 87 title over rivals San Sebastian Stags, 57-55, for their 5th title in 6 years. MVP also supported UAAP Champs Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, who defended their title earlier this month.

Coach Frankie Lim still relied on his second stringers to pull off the win in Game 2. After using guard Mar Villahermosa for the big win in Game 1, Lim used David Semerad to close out the series. Semerad finished 15 points including 7 in the pivotal fourth quarter. Semerad scored the marginal basket with 53.6 ticks left over Season 87 MVP Calvin Abueva. His basket gave the Lions a 4 point lead at 57-53.

Jovit Dela Cruz answered for Baste to trim down the lead to 2 with only 37 seconds left in regulation. The Stags had a chance to tie or grab the lead in its final possession but Ronald Pascual threw an airball from rainbow territory to end the Stag’s season.

It was a tough loss for the Topex Robinson-mentored San Sebastian squad as they zoomed to a 15-0 record early in the season only to lose 5 of their last six games. There were even talks then of a sweep but they faltered to give the roaring Red Lions the top seeding then the Stags lost the first game against Letran in their semifinal series. It is a really bitter pill to swallow as they even captured many of the awards but the biggest award eluded them this year.

As for San Beda, winning their 5th title in 6 years has been sweet as they lost Sudan Daniel before the season even started. This is the first time in their 5 title romp that they do not have a foreign reinforcement. Sam Ekwe led them to three titles while Daniels was with them last year. In the finals, the Lions countered the Stag’s star power with an overachieving bench. Their leading scorers in Game 2 were Semerad, Anjo Caram, Villahermosa and Rookie Baser Amer. The Abueva-Pascual-Sangalang trio led the Stags with a combined effort of 40 points.

Dave Marcelo was chosen as the Finals MVP. He averaged an astounding 13.5 boards per game in the Finals while battling the likes of Abueva and Pascual. Mythical team member Garvo Lanete of San Beda was not a 100% in the finals but the reserve guards filled in nicely.

Scores:

SAN BEDA 57 — D. Semerad 15, Caram 10, Villahermosa 8, Amer 7, Dela Rosa 5, K. Pascual 4, A. Semerad 2, J. Pascual 2, Marcelo 2, Lanete 2.

SAN SEBASTIAN 55 — Pascual 15, Sangalang 13, Abueva 12, Miranda 5, Antipuesto 4, Dela Cruz 4, Del Rio 2, Vitug 0, Maiquez 0.

Quarterscores: 14-15, 27-32, 48-50, 57-55

After trailing to the San Sebastian Stags for most of the season, the defending champions San Beda Red Lions needed an extra game to grab the top seeding in the Final Four of the 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Lions beat the Stags, 88-85, behind the heroics of Garvo Lañete. The Red Lions were trailing 84-85 when Lañete hit a triple off a screen to take the lead 87-85. In the ensuing play, Jake Pascual blocked Ronald Pascual’s attempt to tie the game. The ball ended with Anthony Semerad who was fouled and then split his free throws for a 3 point Red Lions’ lead. The final play of the game was a tree point attempt by Calvin Abueva that was off the mark.

Lañete top scored for San Beda with 27 points. He was supported by Rome dela Rosa, and Semerad. San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva had a monster game, he finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Letran Knights blemished the perfect record of the San Sebastian Stags in the 87th Season of the NCAA with a magical 82-81 victory. The teams were so evenly matched that they needed an extra five minutes to settle the outcome.

Kevin Alas hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in overtime to turn a 79-81 deficit into an 82-81 lead. The Knight’s defense held on to prevent the league leading Stags from making a go-ahead basket. The victory means that this year’s NCAA will have a Final 4. Had the Stags swept the double-round robin eliminations, they would have gained a thrice-to-beat advantage and a free ride to the finals.

Alas finished the game with 22 points  while Ronald Pascual led the losing team with 25 markers. The win improved Letran’s record to 13-3 while dropping the Stags record to 15-1. The Knights still trail the San Beda Red Lions (14-2) for the No.2 spot in the Final 4.
