2013 PBA Draft: Barako Bull trades its 3 first round Picks

3 11 2013

The franchise that is known for trading away valuable draft picks outdid itself by trading away all its first round picks in the 2013 PBA Draft. The Barako Bull Energy had the No.4, No.5, and No.6 of the draft but they ended giving it all away for veteran players. Here is what they exchange for the draft picks:

4th Pick – James Forrester (Ginebra) for Ginebra’s Rico Maierhofer and Willy Wilson

5th Pick – Terence Romeo (Globalport) for Magi Sison and Mark Isip of Petron (Yousif Taha was sent to Petron from Globalport)

6th Pick – RR Garcia (Globalport) for Dennis Miranda

The team got 5 veterans for the 3 rookies with some upside. It will be interesting to see how this trade pans out. In a quick glance it looks like the big winner here is the Globalport which will be the home of the FEU Tamaraw guard duo.  Ginebra has now assembled a very athletic young core with Forrester, Aguilar, Ellis, and Slaughter to join forces with Tenorio and Caguioa.  The Barangay would be feeling very confident going into the season.

The legend meets the new-Ginebra squad (pba.ph)

The retirement ceremony of the famed No. 7 jersey of Philippine basketball’s living legend Robert Jaworski became much more memorable to the Ginebra fanatics when the new generation- Barangay Ginebra Kings (7-4, 2-0)won over sister team Petron Blaze Boosters (6-5, 1-1), 87-85.

Down by 11 at the start of the final period, Ginebra took its first lead in the 4th quarter at 81-80 when Mark “The Spark” Caguioa hit 2 of his 3 freebies after being fouled while attempting a three-point shot. Petron’s Chris Lutz answered with a bucket to bring back the lead to the Boosters at 82-81. Cedric Bozeman and Arwind Santos made a free throw each to bring the score to 83-82 in favor of Petron with 41.4 seconds left and Petron having the possession.  Petron Marcus Faison missed in the next play.  Rico Maierhofer was fouled in the rebound but he missed his two free throws. Rookie Dylan Ababou grabbed the offensive rebound and converted a three-point play to give the Gin Kings an 85-83 lead with 25.8 seconds left in regulation.  In the next play, Alex Cabagnot made a clutch drive for Petron to knot the game at 85-all with 15.9 seconds left.  Coach Siot Tanquingcen called a timeout to draw up the final play.  He designed a play for Caguioa, unfortunately for Barangay Ginebra, Caguiao was not able to free himself from his defender.  The ball was left in the hands of Bozeman who waited for the time to go down to just a few seconds before going to the right and making a shot with 0.8 seconds left in the game.   Petron’s final heave missed which led to pandemonium and a magical ending to a memorable night in Philippine basketball history.
