Sonny Boy Jaro wins WBC Flyweight belt

2 03 2012

Chonburi, Thailand – No.8 ranked Sonny Boy Jaro of the Philippines beat WBC Flyweight Champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam to capture the 112 lb. belt via knockout. The win can be considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history as Jaro was not expected to win decisively against Pongsalek (83 wins 4 losses 2 draws) who was recently awarded by the WBC as “Fighter of the Decade”.

Jaro started so strong that he knocked down the Thai champ on the first round stunning the hometown crowd. The veteran Pongsalek fell again in the 4th round before the referee gave the match Jaro (33-10-5) in 6th round.

The 29 year old Jaro will be facing mandatory challenger Toshiyuki Igarashi of Japan for his first defense.
