Baku 2011 Medal Standing

9 10 2011

The 2011 AIBA World Boxing championships has ended the first batch of olympic slots for boxing have been given. The Baku 2011 was dominated by Ukraine, as the former Soviet state garnered 4 gold medals and 1 silver. They surprised teams like Russia in the heavier weight categories. England had a tough final day as 3 of its boxers settled for silver medals. Zou Shiming got a gold for China and he is still undefeated since 2005 in the lightest weight class. The African continent was only awarded 1 slot  from the world championships. Many experts fell that AIBA is giving too much allocation to a continent where boxing is not an important sport. Asia and Europe has filled more than half of their allocations. Africa had 52 slots while Asia has 56 and Europe 78.
