The University of San Carlo Warriors will battle the reigning CESAFI Champions University of Cebu for a slot in the Final 4 of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League.  This match-up was a result of their respective victories in the Sweet 16. The Warriors eliminated perennial Visayan powerhouse University of the Visayas Green Lancers 71-64 while UC coasted in its win against the University of Ilo-Ilo Wildcats 96-66.

USC was led by Sam Jordan Hermosa who sizzled with 25 points including 10 in the final quarter. He was backed by Joven Cid Cortes and Mike Cantonao who scored 18 and 13 respectively.  Ralf Olivares topscored for the defeated Green Lancers who recently ended their 9-year streak of CESAFI championships. In the main game, Junmar Fajardo was dominant as expect. He collected 14 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

2 pm Far Eastern University vs. Jose Rizal University

4 pm University of Cebu vs. University of San Carlos

caloycomment: It is very surprising that UV was eliminated early. Most likely, we will see Junmar Fajardo strut his wares in Manila for the Final 4.  The FEU-JRU tiff is a very interesting match between a UAAP powerhouse and the 3rd placers of the recent NCAA.  Let’s see who would want the title more.

PCCL: It’s Sweet 16 time!!!

18 11 2010

The Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) is down to its final 16 teams.  The tournament will try to find the best college squad in the Philippines.  This tournament will showcase the best teams of Manila battle the underrated quintets from the provinces.  After the tough zonals, the cast of the Sweet 16 is final complete.

The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (CESAFI), will host the first matches of this stage.  Four Visayan teams will slug it out a berth in the Final 4. The University of Cebu Webmasters, University of the Visayas Green Lancers, University of San Carlos Warriors, and the University of Ilo-Ilo, are the 4 representatives of the Visayas and Mindanao in the Sweet 16. The other Sweet 16 match-ups to be played in Cebu will pit Far Eastern University Tamaraws against the Jose Rizal University Bombers. The games will be held at the Cebu Coliseum.

caloycomment: Hopefully teams from the Visayas will make a dent on the Manila dominance of college basketball. I expect this tourney to be the coming out party of Cebuano behemoth Junmar Fajardo.
