World Series Boxing: Suarez scores in Mumbai’s upset of Baku

Daulet Sports Complex, Mumbai, India – Multi-titled Filipino amateur boxer Charly Suarez beat World No. 4 Semen Gribachev of Azerbaijan in their lightweight match-up to contribute in Venky’s Mumbai Fighters’ upset win over the erstwhile undefeated Baku Fires, 3-2, in the first leg of the quarterfinal round of the World Series Boxing (WSB). Suarez hit the seeded opponent searing combinations to the delight of the home town crowd who ended up chanting his name.

Other winners from the Mumbai team were heavyweight Uaine Fa, who outwitted Haji Murtu Zalieyev and Light Heavyweight Sergii Melnyk who won a virtual brawl against Vatan Huseynli. Baku socred on the victories of WSB No. 1 Bantamweight Gairbek Germakhanov and Middleweight Nikolai Vesilou over Jitender Kumar and Thomas Jablonski, respectively.

The second leg will be held next week with Baku hoping to find its winning form at home. Suarez will also try to grab an olympic berth for the Philippines in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan to be held April 4-13.
